407 and 689 Area codes serve the city of Orlando and surrounding regions, covering Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, as well as parts of Volusia and Lake counties in Florida.
The Origin and Evolution of Area Code 407
Established in 1988 from a split of area code 305, area code 407 originally covered a large portion of Central Florida, including the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast. Subsequent splits in 1996 and 2000 led to the creation of area codes 561 and 321, refining 407 to its current coverage.
Introduction of Area Code 321 and Its Relationship with 407
In 2000, area code 321 was introduced, initially covering Brevard County and overlaying parts of Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. By 2003, new numbers in these three counties were no longer issued in 321, solidifying its focus on Brevard County while maintaining existing 321 numbers in the Orlando metro area.
The Addition of Area Code 689 as a Modern Overlay
Area code 689 was introduced in June 2019 as an overlay for the existing 407 area, excluding the standalone 321 area. This addition helped accommodate the growing demand for new telephone numbers in the region.
